Research Topics

Neuropathology (1969-1978): In this field Manfred Oehmichen investigated the origin and classification of the cells of the cerebral spinal fluid as well as their diagnostic significance. The results were published in the monograph „Cytology of  the Cerebrospinal Fluid“ (1976). The second focus of his research in Neuropathology was the origin and function of microglial cells of the brain. An overview of the results of this research appears in the monograph „Mononuclear Phagocytes of the Central Nervous System“ (1978).
Forensic Pathology (1978-2009): In keeping with my his educational background mentioned above, Manfred OehmichenI consistently applied his experience in Neuropathology to address specific questions in Forensic Neuropathology. His main areas of emphasis were traumatology - especially the estimation of survival time following brain trauma - pediatric neuropathology, and cerebral ischemia and hypoxia. These questions were examined in his monograph „Forensic Neuropathology and Associated Neurology“ (2006/2009).
His primary focus in Forensic Pathology was on problems associated with the estimation of wound age. These questions were answered chiefly employing cytological and histochemical methods and were published in the monograph „Die Wundheilung“ (1990).
A further area of interest was his encounter with the ethical questions arising during his almost 10 years service as chairman of the Ethics Commission of the Medical Faculty of the University of Lübeck. His thoughts on this experience are treated in two papers „Die ethisch-rechtliche Basis der medizinischen Forschung am/mit Menschen: Ethik-Kommission“ (1997) and “Ursprung ethischer Normen und ihre Folgen für  Arzt, Forschung und das Fach Rechtsmedizin“ (2003).
